🏠 Planning a modern home? Don't forget about the LAN! A stable internet connection is no longer a luxury, but a necessity these days. Learn how to plan and implement a home LAN installation that will provide high-speed internet in every room. We'll advise you on which cables to choose, where to place RJ45 sockets, and how to set up a central distribution point. Read our guide and build a network that will operate reliably for years to come!

Installing a LAN network at home - how to plan a modern wired network?

With more and more devices connecting to the internet, from computers and smart TVs to alarm systems and IP cameras, a home LAN is becoming the foundation of any modern installation. A wired connection is still the most stable, fast, and secure form of data transfer, so it's worth ensuring it's professionally installed.

In this article we suggest:

  • how to plan a LAN network at home ,

  • what cables and sockets to choose,

  • what to pay attention to during installation,

  • and what electrical installation products will be useful to you.

What is a LAN and why is it worth having one at home?

A LAN (Local Area Network) is a local computer network in which devices are connected via Ethernet cables. Despite the popularity of Wi-Fi, a LAN offers:

  • higher data transfer speed (up to 10 Gbit/s),

  • lower latency (ping),

  • resistance to interference,

  • greater security.

LAN is an ideal solution for, among others:

  • players and streamers,

  • people working remotely,

  • owners of NAS, IP cameras, Smart TV,

  • homes with smart home systems.

How to plan a LAN installation at home?

1. Determine the number and location of network points

It is best to plan at least 1-2 LAN sockets in each room - especially where there will be:

  • computers,

  • televisions,

  • consoles,

  • network printers,

  • alarm control panels.

2. Choose the right Ethernet cable

For a single-family home, the following are recommended:

  • Category 6 cables - up to 1 Gbit/s (often sufficient),

  • category 6a or 7 - if you are planning 10 Gbit/s or a NAS server.

3. Provide a central point for the network – a telecommunications cabinet

All cables should come together in one place - preferably in a multimedia RACK cabinet , where you can place:

  • router,

  • network switch,

  • possibly a patch panel,

  • safety devices (UPS, surge protectors).

What will you need to create a LAN?

To perform a stable and professional network installation at home, prepare:

  • LAN cables (min. Cat. 6, shielded U/FTP or S/FTP),

  • RJ45 sockets – flush-mounted or surface-mounted,

  • Installation boxes – with space for cables,

  • Patch panels - with more points,

  • Network switch - splitting the signal from the router,

  • Telecommunication cabinet - with ventilation and power supply,

  • Cable holders and guides - for aesthetic cable management.

Practical assembly tips

  • Avoid running LAN cables in parallel with 230V cables - this may cause interference.

  • Use cable channels - this will facilitate future modernization.
  • Leave a spare wire in the boxes - at least 20-30 cm.
  • Test each line with a LAN tester - especially before plastering.
  • Modular trunking allows you to freely add additional RJ-45 sockets
  • The use of channels with double-sided tape allows for clean installation without unnecessary dust.

The most common errors in a home LAN

  • Too few LAN points - difficult to add them later.

  • Low category cables - limit throughput.

  • No telecommunications cabinet - cable chaos at the router.

  • Sockets mounted too low - vulnerable to damage.

Summary

A home LAN is an investment in connection stability and speed. Unlike Wi-Fi, it ensures there will be no interference or speed drops, regardless of the number of connected devices. If you're planning a new home or renovation, consider LAN during the electrical design phase.
